The Forest and the Trees: An Editor’s Journey

Meetings and events | Branch meetings | Executive committee meetings

Join Editors Toronto on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at 7:00 pm EST via Zoom for “The Forest and the Trees: An Editor’s Journey.”

How does one wind up in the field of editing and how does one navigate it? Michael Kenyon will take us along his own unique path to editing. An author and a longtime freelance partner of a small press, Michael will examine the different aspects of his career to date, including:

  • The different approaches he takes to editing in each genre.
  • The role his training as a therapist and the study of psychology have played in the editing process.
  • The difference between editing one’s own work and editing the work of others.
  • How to navigate the terrain between a detailed line-by-line edit and a substantive overarching theme and character edit.
  • Working with a group of writers on a single project.

Those interested in editing fiction, poetry, autofiction, or memoir, or those interested in working across multiple disciplines are encouraged to attend!

About the speaker:

Michael Kenyon was born in Sale, England, and has lived on the west coast of Canada since 1967. He has been employed as a seaman, a diver, and a taxi driver, and has been editing – short fiction, novels, poetry, and non-fiction – for over thirty-five years, first for The Malahat Review, then as a freelancer. He offers services such as manuscript evaluation, substantive editing, and copy editing, and is an emeritus member of Editors Canada. He’s the author of five books of poetry, eight fiction, and four chapbooks, which means he has spent time on both sides of the editorial table. Presently he works as a writer, a freelance editor, and a therapist. He lives in Victoria, British Columbia.
