Join Editors Toronto on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 7:00 pm EDT via Zoom for “Elements of Indigenous Style: A Discussion.”

In this session, Deanna Reder, co-editor of the second edition of Gregory Younging’s Elements of Indigenous Style, and Kay Rollans, managing editor for the book’s publisher, Brush Education, will share the story of the book’s conception and development; talk about the impact Younging’s work has had in the fields of editing, publishing, research, and beyond; and explain the need for further editions going forward.

About the speakers:

Deanna Reder (Cree-Métis) is a Professor in the Department of Indigenous Studies and the Department of English at Simon Fraser University. She served as series editor for the Indigenous Studies Series for Wilfrid Laurier University Press from 2010 to 2021; she was faculty for the Aboriginal Editors Circle in 2015; and she is one of the founding members of the Indigenous Editors Association, established in 2019. With lead editor Warren Cariou, she worked as a team member, along with Lorena Fontaine and Jordan Abel, to produce the second edition of Gregory Younging’s Elements of Indigenous Style (2025). Her monograph, Autobiography as Indigenous Intellectual Tradition: Cree and Métis âcimisowina won the 2023 Gabrielle Roy Prize from the Association of Canadian and Quebec Literatures (ACQL), the 2024 MLA Prize for Studies in Native American Literatures, Cultures and Languages, and the 2024 Canada Prize.

Kay Rollans has been the managing editor at Brush Education since 2022. She has worked in publishing for nearly a decade and has extensive experience developing and copyediting postsecondary and professional textbooks and academic works in the humanities, the social sciences, education, and medicine. Kay was the managing and production editor for the second edition of Gregory Younging’s Elements of Indigenous Style.
