Edward Fenner, professor of writing and communications at Seneca Polytechnic and George Brown College, will guide us through the mechanics and the subtleties of editing for the web. He’ll cover:
- In the beginning… there were editors. Then came the internet.
- Editing “Ye Olde Print” versus “Modern Digital Documentation,” the same but different.
- Now there’s microcopy, content personalization, semantic SEO, voice search optimization, and AUGH, I can’t keep up!
- Too many chefs spoil the broth. That’s why we editors are here.
- Audience is everything, right? That depends.
- Fogg Behaviour Model is worth understanding.
- Branding is hell. Wait, what?
- Accessibility is not your enemy.
- Feedback is for chumps (and other crazy stuff people think about web editing).
- You cannot please everybody. Seriously.
- Random tips, tricks, and workarounds.
About the Speaker
Edward Fenner has written, edited, and advised professionally since 1985. Educated in computer maintenance technology, broadcasting, and journalism, as well as corporate, marketing, and technical communications, Edward has put his extensive training and work experience to use with some of the top institutions, corporations, and government agencies in Canada, the United States, and abroad.
He recently retired from publishing and communications at York University and was a long-time member of the University’s Strategic Communications Council and Brand Stewardship Council. In 2008, Edward was named a Fellow of Vanier College. He is also the former managing editor of e-MAGINED, the Canadian e-Magazine of International Education and, as a volunteer, revived the literary journal Existere, where he mentored over 200 students in the art of editing and publishing a magazine.
Edward is currently a professor of writing and communications at Seneca Polytechnic (since 2010) and George Brown College (since 2017).
